Treating Gum Disease with Gingivectomy

Posted: 08/15/2019

For people experiencing the severe stage of gum disease, antibiotics, and deep cleaning will no longer work to treat the condition. This is where gingivectomy comes in handy. Gingivectomy is the process of removing and reshaping loose gum tissues to get rid of deep pockets between the teeth and gums. The candidates for gingivectomy are people suffering from gum recession due to aging, gum disease, infection, and gum injury. A periodontist or oral surgeon often does this procedure.

What happens after the damaged gum tissues are removed?

A temporary putty is placed on top of the gum after the damaged tissues have been removed. The dentist will then recommended to eat only soft foods while the gums are still healing with the putty on top. Once the anesthetic wears off, the patient can perform their usual tasks and continue doing their normal day-to-day activities. However, the healing process of the gums will take weeks along with acquiring the desired shape. Jaw pain will be experienced a few days after the procedure, but this will go away in time; an ice pack and a saltwater rinse will help with the pain. Antibiotics are prescribed by the dentist to prevent the gums from getting infected. After a week, the soreness and minimal pain will disappear completely.

How long does a gingivectomy surgery take?

The time it takes to finish the procedure depends on how much gum tissue requires removal. As an estimate, the time for a single procedure is roughly around 30 to 60 minutes. Gingivectomy for a single tooth takes only one session, but for major gum removal and reshaping, several sessions and visitations are needed.
